How To Check Backlinks | Check Backlinks With This Backlink Checker Button
It’s been some time since I last posted. Been having a blast here on the beach so I’ve forgotten to put up some scheduled posts.
My last post drew in some good responses, tweets, emails and stuff and I’m happy to have helped some people with it. I guess that ping button really helped
One of these days, I should just start backlinking this site. I never really did any for this site, let alone, did keyword research. This site was just for experiments and some occasional rants or sharing. Since we are on the topic of building backlinks, I just want to plug a wso (special offer) of my friend. It’s about a backlink service he is offering. He is one of the smartest people I know in terms of SEO. So I guess it’s going to be worth every dollar.
Now back to the topic of this post. People always ask me how I check backlinks. Is there a software I use? What are the different sites I can use to check backlinks?
First of all, let’s get a few things clear.
If there’s a backlink, no software or online service can give you every detail. If you had 1000 links, site explorer from yahoo might just show you 500. If you had 5000 links, Google Webmaster tools might just show you 50.
“My backlinks are indexed but they are not showing up!”
That’s a typical question I hear everyday. My belief is if it’s indexed, the search engines already know about it even if it’s not showing up in the backlink checker.
I’ll discuss more about backlinks in the future so for now, let’s move on to how I check backlinks.
There are 2 main sites to check backlinks from. Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo Site Explorer.
I prefer using Yahoo’s because it’s faster, it counts more links. Webmaster Tools is better in terms of eliminating duplicate links but it’s like a snail.
I don’t really use software to check unless during keyword research which shows you the number of backlinks.
So what I did was create a button for checking the sites I visit.
For example, go to www.SupportConanObrien.com (this is fictional but yes screw Leno) and click the button which I will be giving you and you will be directed to Site Explorer where you can check the links instantly!
Here’s the code. Just like the ping button I shared with you on another post, just add it to your bookmarks.
On your Browser Bookmark Bar (This is below the place where you type in the URL of a site)
Right click, add “New Bookmark” (Firefox) Similar with Safari and Chrome as well. Screw Explorer, it sucks.
On the Location Text Box:
javascript:location.href=’http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)
So I hope you guys make good use of this. It’s a great tool. With a click of a button you can see the backlinks of a competing site immediately and analyze how they got their links.
Please if you want to share this, please don’t claim this to be your own. It’s simple but it’s not your idea.

stumbled to this post thru google.
I was looking for something like this! I never knew you could do something like that with a bookmark
working very well for me now.
Good tip for simple link check. Although personally I use plugin(s) like SEOquake in Firefox to do the same. I keep them inactive when not “doing SEO” and get additional features while at it.
yeah its good and seems like many people use it.
But I just use software to analyze what seo quake does because its a big bother and kinda slows down the browser hehe
i usually go to my sites or competitor sites so i really need a shortcut to check and analyze backlinks. Thanks for stopping by!
