money 300x166 10 Things You Need To Know Before Starting Your Online Affiliate Marketing BusinessPeople always look for ways to earn money online. The most common way to do that is through affiliate marketing. It has always been right on top of the list to start your online ventures with because the set up costs are so cheap. This is also a great business for lifestyle design. You can earn money while you are still sleeping and work anywhere you want.

I have seen many people just try to earn as an affiliate and fail. So before I start with my posts about online affiliate marketing, I would like to clear up some things first that you need to know.

1. Watch Your Money
At the beginning, you will love that you are learning from free stuff. You keep reading and you see an offer for a complete system that will teach you what to do step by step…only for $47. You proceed to buy it and a couple more days you get an email about a awesome, cool, out of this world, secret “software” which you can use for building your business and is sold, ONLY FOR YOU, at $97. You think about it and you pass on the offer. A week later, another email comes, and it’s about the software again but this time, the name ends with “2.0!” Wow! You had to buy it, and you shell out money again.

The point is, you will get many offers, sometimes irresistible offers, throughout your time working on the internet. I know many marketers are going to hate me, but don’t buy every single product out there.

If you want an educational package that you think will fill the gap that you are missing, then buy it but don’t buy another one on the same topic! If it is a revolutionary software, then give it a try. Use the full trial period before deciding to buy it. when starting out, you need your money to pay for hosting, domain names, autoresponders. You might even need to pay web designers, article writers, and pay per click ads.

So keep your money close to you. If possible, buy only from trusted marketers because the product is more often than not, screened by them because they have reputations to keep.

2. Time Your Education (You Have To Love Studying)
You have to love studying material about this because this is a continuous process. There are always new things to try. To make conversions higher, to drive traffic faster, to pay for ads in a cheaper way, to create better copy, to rehash old products and so on.

With so many things to learn, you have to time it. Put a schedule on when you are going to learn and only do just that. Don’t multi task with other things. If you are learning on the computer, use a pen and paper to take down notes, or use a word processor. Turn off your mail application, instant messengers….and twitter.

3. Implement What You Learned Immediately
You will surely reach a stage where you know so much information and still more information keeps coming your way. Information overload is common and I was also a victim. I wanted to learn so much as fast as possible which turned out to be a really bad idea because you won’t take action.

So this tip is for you to be able to avoid that. Learn one thing at a time, and implement immediately. A great example of this is Problogger’s 31 Days To Build A Better Blog course where he sends you an email daily with 1 task a day so you can concentrate on implementation.

4. Opt In To Other People’s Lists
You will reach a point where you think you know everything, and you will feel that you don’t have to opt in get anyone’s newsletters and follow ups.

I suggest that you do this with a separate email account if you don’t really want to opt in to someone’s list but are curious of his stuff. By opting in, you can learn why people send out emails in certain structures, why it hits you the most so that you are compelled to buy, what strategies they use, what they package with the product as bonuses and what’s the NEW “it”product.

5. Keep Your Eyes Open
Aside from continuous learning and opting in to other people’s email lists, you need to keep your eyes open for trends. If you can predict something, position yourself to a market and find a product to sell to them, you are well on your way to earning big money. Look at your options, you never know, maybe the best product is already right in front of you.

6. Create Your Own System
This is vital. In affiliate marketing, you will keep on repeating the core tasks over and over again. If you do not have a system, you will keep wasting time. Don’t worry, it won’t be boring because you will inject some new ideas here and there so you can test it. If the idea is good, you can include it into your system.

7. Schedule Your Daily Tasks Based On The System
This is vital for lifestyle design, with the system in check, you will be overwhelmed with things to do. You now have to separate tasks into a certain time period per day. If you don’t do that, you will keep on working non stop OR just give up.

You have to have breaks and you need to have time for yourself to recharge. Sometimes, during relaxing is where you get the best ideas.

Here is a previous post I made where I listed down some softwares/tools I use to help me Schedule My Daily Tasks

8. You Got To Learn And Love Tracking
Affiliate marketing is a numbers game. Don’t get intimidated though, because you will have tools at your disposal. Tracking is where you check how your site is doing, how your conversion rate is low, where you get traffic, how they found your site, which headline/title is better, which email got the most sales and so on.

By learning to track, you maximize your profits and funnel it into bigger sales in the future.

9. You Have To Be Patient
It starts with a dollar. Sometimes, it will take a day, sometimes it will take 3 months, sometimes it will take longer than a year. With that said, that dollar will most likely take a long time before you get it but the fun part is, when you get that first dollar, there’s nowhere to go but up. You will build momentum and you will love every single minute of it! Don’t get caught up with that though, you have to continuously improve your business.

Oh by the way, do not click your site’s Google Adsense ads just to get that first dollar. You will feel the wrath of Google. I was ignorant so I experimented on this a while back. I was checking out the sites that advertised in adsense so Google sent me a warning email. Just a heads up! Read their Terms! :-)

10. You Need To Want It…Badly
Don’t be afraid to fail. If you fail, you will learn so much faster. If you can, try to listen to people that have failed before so you don’t commit the same mistakes. If you just can’t trust the advice, go try it out yourself. You have to want to do this and make money badly. Bad enough that you are willing to put your pride aside and put the work in. Affiliate marketing is not hard, it’s not overly complicated…you just have to try, to find out for yourself what really is difficult and what isn’t.

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult. – Seneca

Many people who are advocates of lifestyle design are also marketers. I’ve met a lot of them and they are all great inspirations. In conclusion, there should a few more in the list but I’ll leave that up to you. I hope you enjoyed the post. I’d like to hear from you, so leave you comments below!

Oh, if you could Digg, Stumble, Delicious, Retweet or whatever this, that would be cool. :-)
